My time through this fantastic and mythical tunnel has had me not just believing, but in a way, craving more of what the possibilities could become. Even now, as I think about my most recent journey and the walkI took with my new friend, I cannot help but wonder what could be next and who I could help out next. It’s interesting when you think about it, as I never know who I will become, what challenges I may face, and when or where I may end up, but as The Time Tunnel Gamer, I must do what I do best at all costs. This time, I saw a drum set under the sky in the tunnel opening.
I sat down, and with the drumsticks in my hands, still puzzled as to why I was sitting in front of the drums, I heard the first beat of the song. With the sticks in my hands, I was drumming to The Cure’s “Friday, I’m In Love.” Could it be that I was Jason Cooper of The Cure? All I know is that I was hitting the drums like nothing else. And the more I went, the more sparks started to fly like I was welding.
As I got through the song, I heard the crowd cheer. Don’t get me wrong, this was an amazing feeling, but why was I here, and why am I playing the drums? Before I knew it, the drums started again, and this time, I felt transformed into someone new, and then the music started, a song I have heard many times, “Kryptonite” by Three Doors Down. But was I supposed to be Brad Arnold of the band or what?
Soon, there seemed to be some sort of internal conflict as the music slowed down, and it was like I couldn’t play. The crowd that was just cheering for me was now booing me. But then instantly, there seemed to be a reset, and the drums started again, the sky with the sun setting, and John Bon Jovi was singing. Was I Tico Torres now? Whatever internal conflict was going on seemed to have gone away as the crowd was once again cheering.
It seemed that no matter what song I played, something felt like I needed to do. I kept trying to play within the different environments with the different levels. At times, I thought I needed to play faster or slower, thinking that maybe the tempo needed to be different. But it wasn’t until I started to play the Foo Fighters’ “Pretender” that I realized what I was meant to do.
And once I understood what I was here for, I saw the opening of the tunnel, and I knew it was my time to go. What I understood was not necessarily how we play, but why we play. It’s almost a reminder of how Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters was and what he did with every performance. We must treat every day like we may never get a chance to play again, to play like everyone is watching, even when those times when we feel like they are not, and never forget to have fun while doing so.
